SUMMARY:Pinewood Derby Race Day
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to be hosting our Pinewood Derby at the Martin Auto Museum this year! The museum features over 140 vehicles\, including classic cars\, hot rods\, customs\, imports\, and much more. It also has one of the largest collections of auto memorabilia\, antique gas pumps\, and signage anywhere. \nOur Pinewood Derby will be on Saturday\, January 11th from 9:30(ish) – 1pm.  As a reminder\, the Pack pays for Scout cars\, but if a parent or sibling would like to race\, the cost of additional cars is $5. \nHere are some rules and building tips & tricks:\n\n\nYou have to use everything that comes in the bag\, including the wood block\, wheels\, and axles. You can’t purchase aftermarket parts. (You can purchase a pre-cut BSA wedge wood block\, if you would prefer to start with a wedge shape.)\nThe car has to be made for this race.  No reruns or repaints.\nThe max weight of the car is 141.75 grams. (Try to make it weigh as close to that as you can\, without going over. The heavier it is\, the faster it will go.)\n\nA few additional notes:\n\nThe goal is to have fun.\nThere are lots of great website that provide tricks\, tips\, and design ideas.\nYour Scout should be HEAVILY involved in making the car. If you really want to race\, get a car for the parent/sibling race 😉\nEveryone must behave in accordance with the Scout Law at all times.\nThe goal is to have fun!\nThe goal is to have fun!!\nThe goal is to have fun!!!\n\nTIPS\n\n1. Get your car to the max weight of 5 oz – If you are underweight your car will not be fast enough to win races. Scales are often different so try to get your car to 4.8oz before coming and then add the rest of the weight at the event to make sure we don’t have to remove weight. \n2. The ideal spot to add weight is about an inch in front of your rear axle. If all the weight is in the front the car tends to wobble. If it is all in the very back it can pop wheelies. Michael’s has Pinewood Derby weight kits that easily screw into the bottom of your car. You can also use things like fishing weights\, tire weights\, etc. \n3. Get your wheel alignment as straight as possible – this is key to your car going fast. If you want to get fancy\, make it so that only 3 wheels touch the track to reduce friction. (The fourth wheel has to be present\, but it can be raised.) \n4. Use powdered graphite on the axles – can be purchased at Home Depot or Michaels. No liquid lubricants can be used\, it ruins the track and you will not be allowed to race. \n5. Keep your car aerodynamic. Do not add anything to the sides of the cars that goes past the wheel base\, it won’t fit on the track. \n6. DESCRIPTION:Our pack family campout will be at the AZ National Guard – Camp Navajo Military Reservation.\nWhat to pack (PDF)\nCampout Schedule (PDF)\nCheck-in: Between 4:00PM – 6:00PM on Friday \nCheck-out: 12:00PM on Sunday \nWho: All scouts and at least 1 adult – this is a family campout. The entire family is welcome to come! \nCost: The pack is covering the cost for each scout and 1 adult. Additional family members are $10 per person\, with a maximum of $25 per family. \nPlease Note: \n\nFood for Saturday and Sunday morning is provided by the Pack. Menu to be announced shortly (think super simple!)\nFriday Dinner is on your own.\nDrinks should be brought by each family for their own family members.\nWe have a unique opportunity to sleep in the barracks. You have the choice to share the barracks with any other families that choose to. You MUST stay with your son\, so your family can stay in the barracks OR your family can camp out in a tent. If you choose to stay in the barracks\, you will need to bring your own bedding.\nBring your ID – will need to get on base\n\nCampout Schedule\nFriday\, September 27th:\n⚜ Arrive: Anytime at camp after 4 PM \n⚜ Check in: Check in with Tim Fish or Jennifer Bohnsack to find out where to set up camp \n⚜ Set up Camp/Tent: Scouts should participate in set up as this is a requirement for some Adventures \n⚜ Dinner: On your own \n⚜ Games/Activity: Check with your Den Leader \n⚜ Lights Out: 9 PM \n\nSaturday\, September 28th:\n⚜ 7:30 AM Breakfast \n⚜ 8:30 AM Flag Ceremonies: Den Leaders to lead flag ceremony for the Pack. Scouts must be in complete Class A Uniform (Neckerchief\, Hat\, Shirt\, Belt ). After the ceremony\, please change to Class B Uniform (t-shirt ) for the rest of the activities \n⚜ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Den Activities: Please check in with your Den Leaders for planned activities \n⚜ 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM Lunch \n⚜ 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM Clean up: Everyone asked to participate in lunch clean up \n⚜ 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM Fire Station Activities \n⚜ 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM Den Activities: Please check in with your Den Leaders for planned activities \n⚜ 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM Dinner: Dinner will be provided by the pack. \n⚜ 6:30 PM – 7:00 PM Dinner Clean up: Everyone asked to participate in dinner clean up \n⚜ 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM Campfire Program*: Each Den will do a skit or song for the program\, Awards given *no actual fires due to restrictions \n⚜ 9:00 PM Lights Out: Good Night!! \n\nSunday\, April 21st:\n⚜ 7:30 AM Breakfast \n⚜ 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM Interfaith Service: Led by Tim Fish \n⚜ 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM Leave No Trace: All Scouts & siblings with a few adult volunteers to participate in Leave No Trace activity to clean up camp \n⚜ 11:30 AM Pack up: Scouts help families pack up and depart camp \n⚜ 12:00 PM Last Walkthrough & Departures: All Den Leaders to participate \n\nSpecial Instructions\n⚜ Have all Scouts wash their hands every 2 hours \n⚜ Friday Dinner is on your own.
